Community Payback

Community Payback Benefits Chancetwood

Community Payback Benefits Chancetwood

Chancetwood Respite Home in Sheffield is a council run organisation that provides accommodation on a temporary basis for seriously and terminally ill children for a one day to weekly stay so that their families can have a brief respite from their care needs.

Chancetwood contacted the South Yorkshire Probation Trust Community Payback unit to carry out work on a large grassed area.  The Sheffield Community Payback scheme visited the site, redesigned where necessary to accommodate both land drainage and to create further raised planting in order that children in wheelchairs could mingle with the plants, enjoying their texture and smell.

There was already a nautical theme in some parts of the grounds and the team continued this by retaining bankings and framing the pathways with tannalised poles that were cut to emulate waves. The paths wind around two raised knolls with existing mature tress on and lead up to a large summerhouse with veranda looking back to the main building.

The offenders, whilst in discussion with the beneficiaries and the Community Payback supervisor, decided that a "look out" platform located looking over the tarmac play area should be erected and incorporated into the scheme.  Two offenders with  long unpaid work hours and their supervisor decided that the off-cuts from the poles used to frame the pathway could be used to create the steps up to a seating area.  The offenders in question worked diligently to complete this task.

Running alongside the home in the same building is a children's nursery who also use the garden.  It was necessary to change the architectural design in this area to incorporate raised vegetable beds and to create a focal point of large tannalised and painted poles that were painted to resemble crayons.
